CHAPTER SIXTEEN

JAX

“What are we doing again?”

Luke’s voice carried across the front seat of my truck when I turned into the parking lot of Mac’s. “Meeting Kasey and her friend Kara.”

“What for?”

I shrugged. I hadn’t even asked her what we were doing when she called and asked if I wanted to meet her. I just said yes because there was no fucking way I would say no. “I don’t know. She called and said do you and your brothers want to meet Kara and me at Mac’s, and I said yes.”

I pulled into a parking spot and turned to look at my brother when he snorted. “What?”

He shook his head, a smile playing around his lips. “Never thought I’d see the day when you’d jump for a woman.”

I smirked because he was right. I never thought I would either, but she was all I could think about, and I knew if I lost her, I’d feel it every day for the rest of my life. “Let’s go, asshole.”

I listened to him laugh while I moved from the truck and across the parking lot, Luke coming up behind me when I opened the door to Mac’s. My eyes scanned the small bar until they landed on Kasey sitting in the back at a table with Kara.

“Isn’t that Mark with them?” Luke asked from beside me.

“Yes.” I thought back to the last time he and Kasey were together at this same damn bar and gritted my teeth. I knew there was nothing between them, but my jealousy didn’t give a damn. I’d watched them together, and he made her laugh in a way I hadn’t been able to.

Yet.

“I’ll grab us a couple of beers,” Luke said before he moved toward the bar.

I made my way toward the back and knew the moment Kasey sensed me because her head snapped up, and she stood. I went right to her. It had only been a day since I’d touched her, but for some reason, it felt like longer.

“You made it.” She smiled, and my gut twisted as I’d come to expect.

I reached out and slid my finger along the waistband of her jeans, dipping it inside the edge and pulling her until she was pressed up against me, palms flat against my chest. “All you ever have to do is ask, Kasey.”

She smiled sweetly and dropped her eyes, but not before I saw something pass through them. Something I couldn’t decipher. Not yet anyway.

She turned her head toward the table and gestured. “Jax, you remember Mark and Kara, right?”

Mark stood and held out his hand, which I shook. “Nice to see you, man.”

“Hi, Jax.” Kara waved from her seat by Kasey, and I lifted my chin in her direction.

“And that’s Melissa and Dana. They’re teachers at the elementary school with us.”

They both called out their hellos, which I returned before I felt something cold up against my arm. I turned and grabbed the bottle out of Luke’s hand and faced the table again.

“Luke, you made it too,” Kasey said excitedly, and my head snapped her way.
